Day 3

1.  FACTORS of SOCIALIZATION: What shapes/influences your beliefs on the issues.

Family/friends: dinner table conversation-the more you hear the more you believe it and take it for your own truth.  Do you have the same beliefs as your parent/guardian?  Do all of your friends have the same beliefs?  Who challenges you to think from a different point of view?

Media: Depending on what your beliefs are the media could intensify it.  Do you listen to liberal and conservative news outlets?

Demographics: Your geographical location in the US can affect your ideology.  If you live on the coast you have more exposure to diverse perspectives meaning that could affect you either way.  What about Cal Berkeley?  Historically the most liberal school in the country.

Religion: Are your opinions influenced by your religion? Abortion? Death Penalty? Stem Cell research? Death with Dignity?

Age: the younger you are the more influenced you are by the factors around you.

Social Economic Status: If you are in the top tax bracket you could be opposed to heavy taxes.  If you depend on social programs to thrive then you would be more in favor of higher taxes.

Job:  Public Defender vs. Prosecutor, Environmentalist vs. Wall Street
Historically Disenfranchised: Youth, People of Color, Women might support candidates who support causes that would align with these groups.
